The Declaration of Independence of Armenia

August 23, 1990, one of the most important events in the recent history of Armenia took place. The Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR adopted a declaration on the independence of Armenia. With this declaration, the process of independence was launched, and the nationwide movement in Armenia received a new dimension.

The Declaration of Independence of Armenia was based on the joint decision of the Supreme Council of the Arm SSR and the National Council of Nagorno-Karabakh “On the unification of the Arm SSR and Nagorno-Karabakh” of December 1, 1989. According to the declaration, the Republic of Armenia is a full-fledged independent state endowed with full power and sovereignty.
