Makaravank is the only Armenian monastery in northern Cyprus (the territory of Genocidal Turkish-occupied Northern Cyprus)
After the Turkish invasion in the summer of 1974 on the territory of northern Cyprus, the Armenian community could no longer hold Surb Makar in its possession. As a result, the monastery was plundered. In 1997–1998 and 2005, the occupying authorities intended to turn it into a hotel, but they had to abandon this due to protests from the authorities of Cyprus and Armenia, the Cilician Catholicosate, the Vatican, UNESCO and the European Union.
