THE RED BRIDGE

The Red Bridge (Arm. Կարմիր կամուրջ, Karmir Kamurj), also known as the Old Hrazdan Bridge or the Khoja Pilava Bridge (Arm. Խոջա Փլավի կամուրջ, Khoja Plavi Kamurj) is a destroyed bridge across the Hrazdan River, located in Yerevan.

The name “red” was given in honor of the volcanic tuff from which it was built. Also known as the Khoja Pilava Bridge, a rich man from Kanaker, who allocated money for its reconstruction.

The total length of the bridge reached 80 m, height – 11 m. The bridge had four spans: two in the middle, two along the banks of the Hrazdan River. Previously, there was another bridge in its place, which appeared in the Middle Ages and was of particular importance, since all caravans went to the city along it, and it also connected the Yerevan fortress and the Ararat valley.

In 1679 the old bridge was destroyed by an earthquake. The Red Bridge was rebuilt in 1851 and became a structure with two spans, at the ends of which there was another opening for irrigation water. After the construction of the Victory Bridge, the relevance of the Red Bridge was lost and it was abandoned.
