ARAKS RIVER

In the Armenian Highlands, the Araks River is the largest river, and it is also one of the largest rivers in the region.

The mouth of the river is located on the territory of occupied Azerbaijan, while the upper reaches are geographically situated on the border between Armenia and occupied Western Armenia (Turkey). It is estimated that the Araks River has a total length of 995 kilometers and that its source is located in the mountains of Byurakan, Armenia, at an elevation of 3,300 meters.

Hecataeus of Miletus, a geographer who lived in ancient Greece before our time, was the first person described to have mentioned the river. Araks, Aras, Araz, and Aros were some of the names that were used to refer to the river in ancient writings. The Armenians referred to the river as Yeraskh.
