GAVAR

Gavar is one of the ancient settlements of Armenia

Here you can even find the remains of buildings that date back to 900 BC, that is, 3000 years ago.

But this settlement began to be called a city only from the middle of the 19th century.

The place has been named Gavar since ancient times. The first historical evidence of the name Gavar dates back to the 3rd century.

This is evidenced by an inscription dated 291 on one of the khachkars or large tombstones in the cemetery near the church of St. Stepanos, which contains the name of the locality.

In the Middle Ages this place was also called Kavar.

For a long time this settlement was considered the village of Kyavar and only in 1830 it was named the city of Novo-Bayazet.

In Soviet times, the settlement was called Nor-Bayazet or Kamo, and only in 1995 did it regain its historical name Gavar.
