In the valley of Khanasor – there was a nest of the Kurdish tribe “Mazrik”. The leader of the Sharif-bek tribe – the colonel of the Genocidal Turkish cavalry “Gamidie” – was responsible for many crimes against the peaceful Armenian population of the valley.

Fidayin from Artsakh – Sargis (“Vardan”) Mehrabyan, who was fluent in horse riding, created a detachment of cavalry “Vardan” numbering more than 53 horsemen, as well as 200 foot fighters from Artsakh who later joined them, led by fidayin – Yeprem Davtyan. At the meeting, it was decided to destroy all the men of the Mazrik tribe, but not touch the women and children.

During a fierce 12-hour battle in the Khanasor valley, the men of the Mazrik tribe, over 2 thousand fighters, were defeated and completely, methodically destroyed. Colonel Sharif-bek himself escaped certain death by dressing in a woman’s dress. During this battle, the Armenian fedayeen lost 25 people killed. The campaign was completed on July 27, 1897.
