Thousands of Armenian churches were built during the long history of Christianity. They ranged in size from very small to large, although the major cities of Europe did not have gigantic structures such as St. Peter’s in Rome or Hagia Sophia in Constantinople.
Some churches were small with a single dome, while others were part of monasteries. A large number of types have been developed, providing a variety of external forms and internal volumes.
The architecture of churches in Armenia usually changed according to local landscape conditions. A number of unique church buildings were invented by Armenian architects as part of buildings that were more aesthetically and practically effective.
The picture shows all the Armenian churches, from small to large, on the territory of Western Armenia (occupied by Turkey) and in Turkey itself. Unfortunately, now almost all of them have been destroyed or turned into mosques.
